Composting

What if I can’t compost?

If you aren’t able to compost foodservice products or you aren’t close enough to a commercial compost facility, our recommendation is to reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible. While we’re dedicated to delivering sustainable solutions to the industry, the most effective method to limiting waste ending up in the wrong places is not to use it in the first place.

What products can I compost?

Nowadays, all items claim compostability, but make sure that you are only composting products certified for home compost if you’re composting in your backyard. If not, items labeled industrial compost certified must be properly disposed of, ensuring that they will end up in a land-based commercial compost facility. What is composting, and how does it work?

Composting is the natural process of recycling organic matter. Its main uses are to fertilize and enrich the soil, limiting the use of chemical fertilizers. In addition, composts help keep organic materials out of landfills, where they would only contribute to the production of greenhouse gases like methane.

Are your products marine biodegradable?

Only our PHA straws are internationally certified as marine biodegradable. They are also certified for industrial & home compost as well as soil biodegradable.

What is the difference between your products and PLA products?

PLA products require them to end up in compost sites where they can properly be treated and composted. While we promote PLA products in areas with compost sites, not many areas have the facilities, especially if you’re not in the US. However, we have the capacity to manufacture these types of products specifically for clients in regions with proper waste management methods. How do you make your Agave products?

Our Agave line is bio-based and sourced from the agro-industrial waste that the tequila industry in Jalisco, Mexico generates. These innovative products are lab tested to degrade in 1-3 years when in a biologically active landfill. In other words, you can dispose of our products like you regularly do in a trash can, where they will begin to decompose. A much better alternative to plastic products.

Are your sugarcane products waterproof and resistant?

All of our sugarcane products can handle liquids. They are designed to hold without leaking any food or soup and withstand any rough delivery route—the perfect option for take-out.

Do your products contain BPA or PFAS?

Our products do not contain BPA (Bisphenol A). BPA is a chemical compound used to make certain plastics, most generally found in water bottles and other containers used to store food. Although the FDA has indicated that exposure to BPA at low levels is safe or non-harmful, keep in mind that products not marked as BPA-free can contain this chemical.

Our products are also free of PFAS chemicals. Polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS are chemicals that have been found in different types of tableware, dust, and even food. They’re infamously referred to as the “forever” chemicals because they don’t fully degrade. Our sugar cane products are free from this family of chemicals, we work with specifically designed and innovative grease and water resistant additives that do not use PFAS.

Why should I recycle?

Recycling is an innate part of humanity. It is an ethic of resource efficiency and a general responsibility for all of us. As stewards of this planet, we are responsible for protecting the environments’ finite resources for us and future generations. The recycling and waste management industry is a growing and successful business. Investments in collection infrastructure pay enormous dividends in downstream recycling activity. In other words, your contributions by recycling in your home or wherever you have the opportunity to, not only reduce waste and greenhouse gases but pave the way for a growing industry that provides steady jobs and a positive economic outlook for your community.

Does recycling actually help the environment?

Yes, and in a surprisingly paramount way. When we recycle, we limit the amount of waste sent to landfills and combustion facilities, which reduces carbon emissions and the need to collect the waste. In addition, the conservation of natural resources such as timber, water & minerals benefits the waste management ecosystem, reducing its already overstrained load and the need for new raw materials.

Getting it right

Let’s start with the basics. When recycling, we must remove all food or water from recyclable items such as paper, cardboard, bottles, and cans. When disposing of bottles & cans, keep an eye out for a number contained in a triangle that marks the type of plastic resin that the product is made out of.
